What To Do When You're Feeling Stuck
I think dandelions are pretty.
Conventional wisdom says dandelions are weeds and are the enemy of a beautiful lawn.
Who came up with that rule and why do I follow it?
Any time I’m feeling stuck, frustrated, discouraged.... like I’m trying to make something happen and it’s just not happening.... I ask myself, “who came up with that rule and why do I follow it?”
The amazing thing is that we all have a tendency to gravitate toward rules, to make those rules the gospel truth, and then to follow those rules like our lives depend on it.
Rules make things easier, in a sense. Someone else is calling the shots.
Rules give us the illusion of being in control. If I follow the rules, things will turn out the way I expect.
Rules are familiar. I’m in the habit of looking outside of myself for answers.
Rules give us a way out. Things are bad, but there’s just nothing I can do about it.
Rules feel safe. If I start doing things my way, instead of following the rules, what will people say? What will the neighbors say about the dandelions in my yard?
The truth is there is no one way to do life, or any one thing that is a part of life.
There are a multitude of ways to find love.
There are a multitude of ways to be financially secure.
There are a multitude of ways to fill your life with the things you are passionate about.
There are a multitude of ways to experience good health.
There are a multitude of ways to be in relationship with others.
The next time you feel like you are banging your head against a wall trying to make something happen, I encourage you to consider what rules you are following.
Are they rules you came up with on your own? Are they someone else’s rules you’ve bought into? Both can be equally problematic.
Awareness of the rules you’ve chosen to live by is a first step in opening up to other ways, different ways, new ways of doing things.
It’s the difference between letting the dandelions grow and enjoying the sight of them, compared to fighting to keep them off the lawn.
