Peace of Mind Can Be Learned

The challenges and joys that surround you are a mirror for the challenges and joys within you.

The movie projector analogy has always resonated with me. Our day-to-day experiences are like a blank movie screen, neutral in and of themselves. We project our inner world on to that blank screen, and that's what we see.

As an example:

Imagine if someone sent you this quote: "Always practice reckless optimism and kindness." Along with the message: "Thought of you when I saw this post!"

What is your interpretation? What do you project on to this blank movie screen? Here are some possibilities:

(A) You were thinking of me! How sweet!

(B) I am very optimistic and kind. What a compliment! I love that people think this way about me.

(C) Am I being too negative? I wonder if I came across as mean when we were talking the other day. Oh no.

I will never forget a conversation I had with a coach in the very beginning stages of my own healing journey. She suggested to me that I was experiencing life in a certain way (with a lot of emotional pain) because of experiences in my childhood that I hadn't yet worked through.

It was such an amazing moment for me. It was the first time it occurred to me that life didn't have to be so painful. Maybe there was another way to experience life. Maybe I could live with inner peace.

This was good news indeed !!!

The next time you encounter an upset in daily life, consider the movie projector analogy. What if the event is really just a blank screen? What is going on inside of you?
