Healing for Adult Daughters of Narcissistic Mothers
Updated: Jun 28
Many women find themselves in therapy for years, seeking help, open to change, but yet never quite able to fully get past the painful feelings inside, that always seem to trace back to their relationship with mom.
Maternal narcissism is a relatively new area of study in the mental health field, and oftentimes mental health professionals are not well-versed in what to look for, or may not even have it on their radar.
In my own life, the closest diagnosis I received from a therapist came in my 30's, with the diagnosis of "severe neglect in childhood."
In my 40's, it was a prominent business coach, with a personal history of maternal narcissism, who pointed me in the right direction.
I did the research, and was able to conclude for myself, with absolute clarity, that the painful way I was experiencing life was directly related to growing up with maternal narcissism during my childhood.
The relief I felt at discovering this was beyond words. I understood for the first time that I wasn't crazy. This was a real thing, that had been studied in other families, was experienced by other women, and there was a path forward to leaving it behind me, once and for all.
In the video link below, I provide an overview of maternal narcissism: what it is, how it impacts adult daughters, what recovery looks like, and some helpful resources.
